Andrew Kennedy

After retiring from a lifetime of teaching, and being in a state of anomie, I was encouraged to take up painting by a local artist, Monica Groves. Monica, who had started painting in her later years with success, emphasised the therapeutic value of the creative process for me.

So, armed with an ‘O’ Level in Art, a brush and a few drawing skills from years of blackboard work, I enrolled in an art class at the local adult education centre in Fishguard. What I have produced since has sprung from there. The different tutors have influenced my mark making, even as my work has developed since flying the nest.

I do work in various media, although most of my paintings are produced with acrylic paints. As a consumer of art, I am eclectic in my tastes, and I have been unaware of adhering to one style in my own work as I like to experiment and paint different things that catch my interest, in different ways. However, there is a ‘signature’ beginning to appear in my later landscapes, seascapes and paintings of natural forms, leaning towards impressionism in the use of light, tinged with the broodiness of the expressionists.

I have exhibited in solo exhibitions, joint ventures and as part of the Fishguard Arts Society Summer Exhibitions.
