Phil (Phillip) Alder

Hazel Hedge (November Light), oil on canvas

Phil (Phillip) Alder paints using oil paints in the studio and watercolour ‘in situ’.

His house is surrounded by a large garden, orchard and blossom trees and he is a trustee of a historical park and garden restoration. It is therefore unsurprising his source material is largely drawn from his passion for gardens, gardening and nature.

In his studio paintings he aims to evoke the many sensations of being deep within the foliage, blossoms, light and the animating movement enjoyed within informal gardens and woodland..

His technical emphasis is an ‘immersive’ canvas, accurate use of colour and mark; making the brush ‘dance’ upon the canvas.
