WORK/EXHIBITIONS/BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Raul Speek was born in Guantanamo, Cuba in 1958 just as Castro’s revolution started.  He studied art in Havana and rose to be one of Cuba’s top young artists.  In 1989 the BBC Arena programme visited Cuba to make a documentary on the artists and writers there and a year later bought Raul to the UK to take part in an exhibition in London.  Since then he has exhibited across Europe and his paintings feature in many public and private collections across the world.  He moved to Solva in Pembrokeshire in 1995 and has been resident there since,  travelling widely to exhibit and give workshops in schools, art groups and for FAS itself.   Raul is also a talented musician writing his own music performing solo and with his musicians.  He wrote and performed (with a group of Welsh musicians) Pembrokeshire Weather Report,  a semi classical piece on piano and organ, in St Davids Cathedral.  He is currently writing a piece of music called The Welsh Symphony.

Raul believes in the power of community and works to bring art to all age groups.  He is involved In
